   GATEWAY TO ART

This program introduces children to a new world of creativity by presenting to them various artists. The children mimic the artists style in the projects they create. The program enhances a child’s creative and mental growth through art that is non-judgmental. It helps develop a child’s visual perception and awareness by using community resources. There are currently five schools in the area that participate. It has about 80 volunteer docents teaching over 2000 elementary students. Saint Anastasia has been involved since its beginning in 1994. You can view current and past projects at the Gateway To Art website, http://www.gatewaytoart.org.

Every month an artist demonstrates an art project to the docents of all the participating schools. The docents then teach the children at their school the basic background history of the artist, medium, and technique. Step by step instructions are given during class with lots of opportunity for individual creativity.

There are usually six projects created during the school year. Each class will showcase two projects each at the school’s annual art show in May.

This program is based on volunteers. The docents need parental help to make this a successful activity for our students. Gateway to Art not only enriches the lives of our children, but its parents as well. For more information about the program at Saint Anastasia, please contact Sarah Lehne, GTA Program Director.
